Elias Lowe

ABOUT

Lead guitarist Elias Lowe grew up in Celeste, a small East Texas town about sixty miles from Dallas—"Home of the Celeste Blue Devils." A high-school quarterback, Elias describes himself as a typical small-town Texas boy whose first guitar was an inexpensive Gene Autry model that his mother had bought in Arkansas as a teenager. It only had one string, but that didn't stop the gifted six-year-old from pretending he was playing in the band along with Bob Wills, Red Foley, Hank Thompson and Hank Williams. His first real guitar was a twelfth birthday present from his dad—a Sears & Roebuck Silvertone archtop that cost $15. A friend taught him some chords and Elias was off and running, playing with friends and for local dances.

When he graduated from high school, Elias decided to join the Navy and see the world. With his first grown-up paycheck, he bought a new solid-body electric Les Paul Junior and a Gibson amplifier. He practiced diligently all through his six-year tour, and afterward, working as an technician for Lone Star Gas Company. In the break room one day, he heard music and investigated; coworkers Dale Anderson and Max Archer were singing and playing country music. It didn't take much prompting for Elias to get involved, and in 1964 he began his long and prolific career playing in Dallas-Ft. Worth area nightclubs.

In his many years of working the clubs and being on the road, Elias played lead guitar for such notable country musicians as George Jones, Johnny Paycheck and Wynn Stewart. He's shared a stage with Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette (with Don Chapel), Jeannie C. Ryley, Johnny Sea, Tony Douglas, Vern Stovall, and Jimmy Velvet, and has opened for acts like the Wilburn Brothers, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Nat Stuckey, and Porter Waggoner. He even backed up Grandpa Jones in Pennsylvania, on the road with the Jones Boys.

After more than two decades of touring and clubbing, Elias unofficially retired on his Texas ranch near Corsicana, concentrating on beekeeping, raising cattle and horses, and making jewelry (he is also an expert silversmith). But in 2001, friends Russ and Brenda Houck called and asked him to play lead guitar on Brenda's gospel CD—and Elias once again began to add his clean, elegant lead guitar lines to the songs of others.

Currently, Elias has played for local Texas musicians like Kim Edward, Randy Miles, Joe Paul Nichols, Buddy Stevens, Brett Watts, Buddy Hrable, Jim Snyder, Rebecca Jo South and Vicki Gatling. He's available both for gigs and recording, having several albums of studio work under his belt—and has his own studio on the ranch, Shiloh Sounds. With influences ranging from Mark Knopfler to Vince Gill, from Chet Atkins to Alison Krauss, and from Brad Paisley to Danny Gatton, Elias provides reliable, beautiful lead accompaniment in almost every conceivable style, including bluegrass, Southern gospel, contemporary Christian, folk/acoustic rock, and both classic and contemporary country. And his legendary ability to sit down with songwriters and singers and immediately accompany songs he's never heard before can bring such a polished sound to your project that you'll wonder how you ever got along without him.
